How To Measure Ring Size
Although the most accurate way to determine your ring size is by visiting a jeweler or a jewelry store, there are several methods you can use at home.
Tape Method
- Take a thin strip of paper or a piece of string.
- Wrap it around the base of the finger where you will wear the ring.
- Ensure the strip is snug but not too tight. Mark the point where the strip or string meets.
- Unwrap the strip from your finger, straighten it out, and measure the length to the marked point with a ruler.
- This length in millimeters will correspond to your finger’s circumference, which you can compare with a ring size chart.

Using an Existing Ring as a Standard
If you prefer not to or cannot visit a store, try measuring the diameter of a ring.
Measuring with a Ruler
- Place the ring on a ruler so that you can see its inner edge.
- Measure the inner diameter in millimeters. This measurement will be close but might not be as accurate as professional tools.
- Once you have the inner diameter measurement, use it to determine the correct size on a ring size chart.

Measuring with Calipers
- You can measure the ring diameter more accurately using calipers, which allow for very precise measurements of both the inner and outer diameters of the ring.
- If you have calipers, measure the inner diameter of the ring.
- Use the measurement of the inner diameter to determine the correct size on a ring size chart.
Tips
- When measuring finger circumference, consider that fingers can swell on hot days, after exercise, after drinking a lot of fluids, and also in the evening or early morning.
- When choosing a narrow ring, it's recommended to round the measured diameter down, and for a wider ring, round up.
- When choosing a closed type ring, make sure the ring can slide over the joint area.
- If using string for measurement, ensure it does not stretch.
- Be sure to measure the inner diameter of the ring, not the outer.
- When measuring the ring diameter, use a ring that fits well on the finger for which you plan to buy a new ring.
All the above methods are not 100% accurate, and you will only know the exact size using the ring sizing tools available at all jewelry stores.
